YouTube Music App Redesign
Role ( Solo project ) Timeline
UI/UX, Research 2 Weeks
01.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Project Introduction
YouTube Music is a music streaming service developed by YouTube, a subsidiary of Google. It provides a tailored interface for the service, oriented towards music streaming, allowing users to browse through songs and music videos on YouTube based on genres, playlists, and recommendations.
Problem
After communicating with some YouTube Music app users, I found that the product has some pain points in usability and needs some UX solutions. And provide visual design solutions regarding brand recognition and sustainable brand development.
Solution
I analyzed the reasons for the loss of product user engagement from the research on the market trend of music apps and sorted out their pain points in the user interviews. I organized the solutions that could make the product stand out in the competitive product analysis and provided solutions for visual and usability.
Declaimer
I don't work for YouTube. All designs and opinions on this project are on my own. In the future, I hope the YouTube team can confirm my abilities, and I can work side by side with them to develop better products.

RESHERCH
Challenge
How should we make the product's advantages stand out in a highly competitive business environment and use the brand advantages to develop new functions or features to increase user engagements? With these questions, I started this design challenge.

Research direction:
the status of YouTube music app on the market of music streaming platforms.
Insight from the data
Despite launching before its competitors, YouTube Premium (2014) has garnered less subscribers than Amazon Music (2019) and Apple Music (2015). It can be safely determined that YouTube’s subscribers will either plateau or decrease in the incoming years while competitors such as Apple Music and Spotify provide additional services and increase their audience platform.
Target Audience
77% of internet users between
ages 15-35 are on YouTube,
along with 73% of users aged 36-45,
70% of users aged 46-55 and 67% of
users aged 56+

COMPETITOR / HEURISTIC EVALUATION

Pros

The visual classification
is interesting, using colors
to distinguish genres.

Click "add to like songs" and a motion graphic will appear, very surprising interaction design

Switch modes to make the space more tidy
Cons

The shape of each part (module)is relatively monotonous; maybe try some new changes by using the form to distinguish genres.

TAKE AWAY
This is my first time trying to design a music app. This time I redesigned the YouTube music app. In fact, I just simply sorted out the user interface, made each module clearer, and removed some repetitive content. But we still have a lot of things we can do to retain users, like adding some animation elements. For example, if I click to like this song, the icon will have some animation effects. These are some small details that can surprise users; YouTube music can be an excellent product.
In the future, we can even develop some fun functions together, like combining some parts of TikTok to generate some new chemical reactions.
For me, a music app is not just listening to songs but also a music communication platform.
